We were finishing up our session when Hey Jude’s outro blared through the empty room. We all started singing and swaying as I made my last couple images. Ander’s dad gripped his crippled hand tight and in-love as he howled, “Naaaa naaa naaa na na na na!” In that moment, I felt as if I were peering into cupped hands holding my entire life within them - all those joys and sorrows, mysteries and mistakes, Monday mornings and Friday evenings. The highs shrunk and the lows expanded and I felt it all fit peacefully into the place it should: that very moment. For the rest of the week, each photo session with these incredibly strong, loving, and courageous families brought me back to that place with the theme ringing inside my chest: All of what you are belongs here.
To families who adopt, foster, and/or love a kid with special needs: Thank you. Thank you. THANK YOU! Everyone deserves to belong and be loved. Thank you for showing us what that looks like.
