This is an excerpt from a generative sonic installation by Andrew R. Brown and David Harris. 'Stochastic Polyphony at a Distance' is a multi-channel audio installation work. It consists of four (two stereo) voices, each of which follow an identical stochastic generation model whose parameters are controlled by various modulation sources. Because the voices uses data from the quantum random number generator each is unique, but the use of a single algorithm—based on Iannis Xenakis’ Generative Dynamic Synthesis—means they behave similarly. The multiple source modulation structure enables the multi-dimensional algorithmic sound world to be navigated over time resulting in continual variation but aesthetic cohesion.
