The subjects in front and outside the video frame in Sinking
Skills are seemingly affected by an undercurrent feeling of
conductivity. The sound underlying the images mimic or come
from ventilation systems, organs, breaths. All sounds
generated by use of air circulating or passing through bodies
and with it prone to change and instability. When these aerial
sounds, produced by the Ukrainian electronic musician
Zavoloka, are directly played into a pool by means of
underwater speakers and recorded by an underwater
microphone, the whole basin becomes a vibrant body. This is
a staged water performance where the swimmers are
recording each other, while simultaneously constructing an
object and carrier/ raft.
