Cue sheets are the bane of music stakeholder's existence, yet they are critical link in ensuring that music stakeholders (composers, songwriters, publishers, etc.) get paid critical performing rights royalties that make the backbone of their livelihoods. One informal estimate puts the number of human interactions from cue sheet to payday at well over a hundred, all of them inviting another opportunity for error.
In February 2022, SOCAN and the Screen Composers Guild of Canada, with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts will host a hackathon, hoping to rethink the concept of a cue sheet, and to look at how music stakeholders can best get performance rights royalty data to PRO's. We want to share what we learned going through the process.
