Encapsulating the raw emotions summoned by the absence of what once brought happiness, ‘Saudade’ explores the multistage process of loss, through a non-narrative, nostalgic melody of altered smartphone footage.

The word ‘Saudade’, also the title of the film, is of Portuguese origin and is used to describe the feeling of missing something or someone. Through clumsy English, it translates to “the love that remains” after someone is gone. In that respect, this film looks to encapsulate the raw emotions encountered through the loss and absence of what once brought happiness. Solely using smartphone footage, ‘Saudade’ presents a non-narrative melody of visuals and sound that work in conjunction to represent an individual’s perspective on infatuation, anguish, contentment and despair. The vulnerable piecing of the film creates an experience that explores the temperament and fragility in the state of connection between individuals, likening it to the decay of objects that surround us, as time uncontrollably passes through them. Symbolically presented through the altered visuals that defy familiarity, a large focus is placed on the stage in which individuals cope with the longing for what once was.
