Hi, name is Shelby Hodsdon.
For this this rant I decided to speak about the media coverage of school shootings.
Using the FBI’s definition of an “active shooter”, from 2015 to 2018, the U.S. averaged an active shooter on school property every 77 days.
And you can believe the media was involved in each of those cases; which leads to a large issue; IS the media increasing education in gun violence or are they increasing imitation?
Popular news outlet, nbcnews has a school shooting tracker; counting since 2013. Their reasoning to contribute; along side other outlets’; is to increase the public’s understanding of the effects of gun violence over time as well as come up with more consistent statistics; in attempts to limit public fear.
However, It’s well known that people can imitate those they look up to; maybe that’s through fashion trends or popular music. But this can also be true for crimes.
When a school shooting is covered by the media, whether that is TV or even newspaper, they portray the shooter’s image, life story and details of the event. Some of which people can identify with and even possibly; imitate in their own lives.
As someone who has taken a large handful of sociology and psychology courses, this issue is something that I am very passionate about because I am one to follow these stories with daily updates but on the other hand I understand the detrimental effects coverage of school shootings can have on some individuals.
