Dionisio Moretti was a Venetian artist and etcher, born in Corfu in 1790, and deceased in Venice in 1834. In the year the young Moretti turned 7 years old, A.D. 1797, general Napoleon and his invading French Revolutionary Army forced the Venetian doge to abdicate, abolishing the Most Serene Republic of Venice and surrendering its 1100-years-old independence, yielding to French and Austrian control for the next 69 years, before being integrated into the Kingdom of Italy in A.D. 1866. In this context, Moretti came to be active as an artist and etcher during years of French and Austrian occupation, and as such he came to illustrate two tomes written by Antonio Quadri, a prominent Venetian civil servant during the years of French and Austrian sovereignty. He also illustrated the artwork showcased here, a depiction of the Grand Canal in Venice, presumably produced somewhen around the year of 1828. The artwork depicts the facades facing the canal, first depicting the left side moving from the south, then the other side, moving from the north.
