An exploration of Manchester's Pomona Island.

Pomona Island is a post-industrial oasis at the heart of Manchester. This video focuses on the contrasts between the islands rich history; the flora and fauna that have reclaimed it; and the pressures of new development and future technology.

It was shot on a Panasonic Palmcorder PV-DV910, using miniDV cassette. Analogue effects and distortions are used to add to the discourse around the contrasts of Pomona Island and its future. These were created through manual manipulation of cables during the recording process.

The archive audio is that of Paul Graney. The full recordings, that capture the history of Manchester and Pomona Island and feature versions of the popular folk song 'Way Down to Pomona', can be found in the Manchester Central Library archives along side many others he has collected over the years. They are subject to creative commons licence.
