An early anti-drug song, Kicks was one of the band's most popular hits, second only to Indian Reservation in 1971. While there were many bands extolling the pleasures and benefits of getting high on drugs, others like Paul Revere and Sonny Bono (of Sonny & Cher) were busy pushing a different a message: that drugs weren't cool, addiction wasn't cool, and that getting high could lead to extremely harmful consequences for some. Those not listening closely to the lyrics might have been misled into thinking Kicks was saying just the opposite due to its ultra-cool Beatles-style lead guitar and garage rock sound. Indeed, back then I actually thought Paul Revere & The Raiders was a British group, they certainly sounded like one, and was surprised to learn later that they were an American band (not for the first time has that ever happened). The overall reception of the song's message was mixed as it was still spring 1966 and the hippie drug scene would not really start taking hold until late 1966 and 1967. Regardless of the lyrics, I consider it to be one of the more iconic 60's hits and a trailblazer of a song that would, ironically, influence the psychedelic sound destined to dominate 1967 and 1968. Kicks debuted on Billboard in March 1966, peaking in May at #4 (and #1 in Canada). The song fared better on Cash Box, reaching #3 on May 7, 1966.
