Lecture Description:
Art Muse lecturer Regina Mamou discusses Phil Collins, a Turner Prize-nominated artist, who explores geopolitical complexities through video art and music. Using entertainment strategies, such as karaoke and dance marathons, Collins upends the lightheartedness of these platforms by weaving a narrative of youth culture and pop music into questions of political struggle and individual expression. We will explore works by Collins such as the world won't listen (2004–2007), a compilation of video footage of music fans performing karaoke to songs from the album The World Won't Listen (1987) by the British band The Smiths; and they shoot horses (2004), a video installation of young people participating in a dance marathon in Ramallah, Palestine.
