During the Middle-Ages, Narbonne became the seat of an archbishop, so, a large prominent church city indeed. Then, there followed a long decline only interrupted by a short golden age brought about by a flourishing wine industry.
The XXth c. was marked in Narbonne by tragedy in 1907 and the coming to the world of France's "singing jester" Charles Trenet.
