Yes, I am a military veteran!

The kind of unit I served in the Army was called the Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol – or LRRPs. It was also known as the Long Range Surveillance Detachment (LRSD). What we did was operate in teams of six behind enemy lines from around 10 to 15 miles or even more.

It was a very specialized unit where number one - you had to volunteer for the Infantry.

Number two - had to volunteer to go Airborne.

And number three – volunteer to be a LRRP.

The history of the unit goes back to Merrill’s Marauders of WW2. But Vietnam is where the LRRPs came to the public’s attention as many of them were profiled by the popular media. LIFE magazine even did an infamous special on them (where a reporter drove them nuts being noisy and wanting them to pose for shots on a real world mission).

We were NOT Green Berets, Navy SEALs, Pararescue or anything like that. We were a special recon unit, usually attached to non Airborne, or Airborne Infantry units. That being said, we DID train with those units and many others. I was lucky to train with SEAL Team Two, 82nd Airborne, the German Fallschirmjaeger, US Navy Explosive Ordinance and Disposal, US Air Force Pararescue and others.

The guys I served with were and still are amazing people. I learned lifelong lessons from them to this day that I’ll never forget. Being in that unit helped build me into the man/videographer I am today. Despite all the differences we may have (political or otherwise) I will always consider them brothers!

The LRRPs/LRSD don’t exist anymore. All units have been disbanded. Their mission was taken up by believe it or not, the US Air Force (it’s now called Special Reconnaissance). There are other recon elements within other parts of the Army and military but they really don’t come close to heritage of the LRRPs.

I made a tribute video for them which was posted on a Facebook LRRPs/LRSD heritage page. It's only 2 minutes long with pictures of LRRPs from World War 2 to modern times. You may even find a photo of ME in them as well.

And the song? It fits us, PERFECTLY.

Music: "Hoist The Colors" by Hans Zimmer
