Lost Heroes

Emerging from shaded rhododendron
There lay the jade bath of Agamemnon,
Still as fractured glass of his mirror halls
That mighty frame enlaced where winter falls;
Skeletal reminder of that story
Where he last bathed, steeped in Trojan glory.
Still haunted pool of ectoplasm air,
His voice still rises in dark echoes there.
Those resonating shadows of sea hues
Reflected skies, pearl light in morning dews,
Collected tears, past ghosts of tumbled pride
The harmonies swell up from deep inside.
The epic stirs, revealing in its tone
Music of myths and heroes overthrown.

As I drove east I was listening to “Achilles Last Stand” by Led Zeppelin, a work of myth and travel, then parked and set out on my walk, the residue of the song stirring the silt of epic storytelling from the Homer’s “Odyssey” and the Trojan wars. Those thoughts lingered and stitched their patterns into my walk, the tapestry of steps until I reached this idle pool.

Those stories were full of heroes and the mischief that asserts itself as beautiful women interact with them accumulating grievous responses from the gods as part of their epic trials, real human gossip column myths, some with lurid personalities. Yet buried deeply in these stories there is not only vivid adventure but also the music of sorrow, played on instruments and the human voice, as it was delivered in the oral tradition. This was music of the sea, of waters, and ascendant spiritual context.

Anyone who has taken part in Greek tragedies, as I have in “Oedipus Rex”, knows also of the music embedded in the lines, the chants of the chorus, the human voice purposed to induce trance, to free imagination and release emotion, the great moments of drama where a fate is revealed before it is sealed, leaving mouths gasping and eyes appalled.

Music for a Greek chorus, a myth of man bourne from water;
