I began experimenting with using light as a medium during my time at the School for Poetic Computation. I was interested in light because of its direct link to our visual perception: light bouncing off objects and entering our eyes is then translated by our brain into an understanding of our surroundings. Around the same time I was visiting the nearby Hudson River, often for a reason to get outside and relax, and would end up observing the light at play on the water. I was mesmerized and soothed. I tried to recreate these effects back at the studio, using simple lights and reflective materials. This later became Light as a Gift (kdrae.com/light-as-a-gift#1), which I exhibited at the showcase. But I still find these initial experiments fascinating for how complex and three-dimensional their reflected forms are, even when just a result of a simple sheet of reflective mylar. They feel like they're alive: strange, microscopic organisms breathing and fluttering. My interest in light, perception, and lenses both analog and digital continues, and I regularly add to the Are.na channel here: are.na/katherine-diemert/the-light-perception-gaze
