33 nations, 33 cultures, 33 languages, and one common: The creole. For the first time the Guinean people listened to a music that voiced their social concerns and in a language they could understand. Cobiana Jazz used Creole for both cultural and political reasons: to mobilize society to support the liberation struggle. In 1973, with the declaration of independence, work began on a project, which is still in progress: Creole as the official language of Guinea Bissau. Today, the so-called “new generation” musicians use Creole as a form of expression, working jointly with other cultural movements to make Creole the official language.
