MORE ON THE SONG:
Today sees the official release of KELLAN’s music video for his single. I’LL BE. The video was shot in January 2016 in Mitchells Plain - the aesthetics ideal for the visuals of the video which depicts the reality of corrective rape.

The video was directed by Desmond Denton from Imagenheart and filmed by Anna J Nel from Nova Films

“We were very excited to get involved with this project because of the social cause that was linking to a very essential issue in our country through the music video. The fear of rape is real and if you look at the statistics, it’s shocking. I was also very excited due to the cinematic quality of the video, the storyline and the great actors we used and of course the actual song that brings it all together.” - Desmond Denton.

KELLAN originally knew he wanted to cover the topic of homophobia for the video. Being a gay individual himself, it was important to him to brand himself as someone who stands up against hate crimes in our country. His message is to be vigilant. So many young girls, gay or straight, are being raped on a daily basis. They don’t speak up. The video does not have a happy ending and his hope is that those who are victimised by rape, speak out. You could be saving someone else by naming your perpetrator.

The song reflects a feeling of melancholy with an inspirational chorus. The lyrics are open for interpretation. He initially wrote the song as an ode to relationships – the idea of being who your partner wants you to be in the sense of emotional affection. It soon became apparent that these lyrics could be interpreted differently. In the music video, the lesbian couple is torn apart by a violent attack on one of the girls. It is also a visual reminder of what is happening in our townships; young girls are being raped to try and cure them of their sexuality. It is a brutal reminder of the masculinity that clouds our political landscape. It conveys the true nature of corrective rape.

“I am extremely proud of the project thus far. Months of preparation has led me to this moment and I am forever grateful to the people who made it all possible. I wanted to push boundaries with this video because everyone can identify with it. Everyone has a sister, a mother or a female friend. The content matter shows how easily anyone can be a victim to rape.” - KELLAN.
