Irving Berlin wrote the song in 1918 while serving in the U.S. Army at Camp Upton in Yaphank, New York, but set it aside. It was introduced on an Armistice Day broadcast in 1938, sung by Kate Smith on her radio show

Smith "stirred patriotic fervor" during World War II and contributed to selling over $600 million (equivalent to $10.4 billion in 2019) of war bonds during a series of marathon broadcasts. No other show-business star came near her as revenue producer of War Bonds to finance the United States' war effort.

In 1943, Kate Smith's rendition of the song was featured in the patriotic musical This is the Army along with other Berlin songs. It is an all time American favorite.
