It’s inevitable, as you get older, you start losing friends… Arthur Greenwald passed away Friday, April 30th.

In the mid-eighties, Art was the creative services director of KDKA-TV, the CBS affiliate in Pittsburgh. Back then TV was everything…there was no internet, no social media, no X-Box, no iPhones. As a creative services director, it was Art’s job to promote the station and its on-air talent.

Art loved to create music-driven promotions and would often hire Przyborski Productions to execute his creative concepts. I was fortunate to be the director/cinematographer on many of KDKA’s major 35mm promotions from 1979 to 1996. Art always created campaigns that were way beyond the station’s budget, but we always made the impossible happen… Like staging the world’s longest chorus line after a Pirate’s baseball game or a music video with 2,500 extras.

Art Greenwald eventually left KDKA and moved to the Los Angeles area. We remained friends and would talk every month so. A few years ago, Art was diagnosed with “end stage renal disease” and was unable to receive a kidney transplant. I was told that this was partially due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

I edited together some of Art’s favorite promos that we did together for KDKA. For the next 5 minutes, sit back and rewind your mind to the mid-80’s when most families owned a color TV…

note for tech geeks: This video was created from the 1” type-C analog edit masters. Playback was from a Sony BVH-3100 1” deck. The standard definition, NTSC video was then upsampled to 1080P using a Teranex image processor which removed 3-2 pulldown.
