November 1, 2019—Performance of "IN AHAB'S HEAD—CHASING PHANTOM'S"
Playwright/Director Michael Gorman and The Forty Hour Club Collective conducted a collaborative community performance in association with "What’s Art Got To Do With It?"— A 3-day conference about the power of art to address our opioid epidemic.
This short and powerful performance featured R.A.W. Players (Restorative Art Works) & members of the Maine Coastal Regional Re-Entry Center/Restorative Justice Program (all non-actors), in the roles of The Phantom's, and incorporated monologues from them about their lives and experiences dealing with addiction, incarceration, re-entry, and healing.
The event was part of Gorman's on-going project—"Chasing The New White Whale—Harpooning Addiction"— an art & advocacy project dedicated to bringing awareness to the issue of opiate addiction in the commercial fishing community of New England and beyond.
ABOUT THE CONFERENCE:
Using the tools of writing, visual arts, performance, theater, and music, creatives, educators, the addiction/recovery and re-entry communities, and interested people from all disciplines and sectors gathered together in Belfast, Maine for 3-days to consider the opioid epidemic through the powerful lens of creative expression. The conference also featured keynote speaker, violinist, and social justice advocate Vijay Gupta, as well as many others!
The conference was presented by the Belfast Area Creative Coalition and R.A.W. (Restorative Art Works) in conjunction with the University of Maine Hutchinson Center. Belfast, Maine—November 1-3, 2019.
