When I was 18 years old, I felt like I was wasting my life. I realized that I hated my life.
Something was always missing, something had always felt wrong.

I spent most of my time locked in my dorm room writing stream of consciousness post-post modern poems on Tumblr and Facebook.
What made them post-post modern?

Well, I realized that people will hate you no matter what you do, so I might as well be hated for doing and saying my truth.

Thus, I just wrote and said whatever I wanted. And eventually, it started sounding more and more eerily beautiful.

Thoughts like: “he was a cubic zirconia man”

I was inspired by poets like raychillster on tumblr and @postcrunk on twitter. Looking back at that time I was in a lot of emotional pain for a variety of reasons and writing was an outlet. Writing saved my life.

Around that time, I watched my first modern dance performance as a young adult and it moved something in me. It was the most beautiful movement I ever had seen. Looking back, the pieces were definitely Martha Graham style.

At that time I was doing gymnastics to learn how to do a handstand, but I had never taken a dance class.
I was obsessed with the relationship between various movement styles. Parkour, yoga, gymnastics.

But I thought that it was too late, I thought my goal was unreachable. I couldn’t move like that, right?

And yet, it was still moving and beautiful. That was one of the moments at which I can clearly say I was dead before and afterwards was alive.

Another one of those moments was reading The Artist’s Way, which is a book about how artists can release creative blocks and how anyone can unlock creativity.

That book changed my life. It gave me the confidence to call myself an artist. It gave me the confidence to leave university to learn dancing. It gave me the confidence to take my first ballet class. It gave me the confidence to pick up a pencil and make a mark in a sketchbook.

And for that, I am forever grateful.

——

My greatest regrets in life are solely from allowing others’ fears influence my own limits for my life.

I’ve never regretted one poem, one dance, or one drawing.

Art is a matter of life and death.
——
A friend told me that the Chinese character for crisis means both danger and opportunity
It’s actually more complicated than that but that’s a very motivational phrase right
How did this turn into a story about Chinese, it was supposed to be about my artistic epiphany or something

This accumulation improv dance takes one dance move and builds and overlays it upon the next, similar to the looping guitar effect of the song. My actual moves are a mix of contemporary, modern, jazz, and some ballet. But really, they’re just my type of movement. It’s completely improvised, I just edited it together to make the accumulation effect. I suppose you could also call this “contemporary modern dance additive improv choreography”.
