This is a trailer I edited for a project between me and an aspiring film student/director in Bangkok. The project is a series that follows a group of young people and their struggles to get support for their problems since they have all been hiding them their entire lives. This video is about two best friends: Tae and Joon. Tae lives in an abusive household with his sister and alcoholic father after his mother passes away. Joon, his best friend, wants to help him but is torn between his mental health issues and his family and boyfriend who do not want him to spend time with Tae. Tae turns to spending more time on the streets as he does not want to go home. When he does go home he finds his sister in a fight with his father. He tries to help her but in the moment his anger got out of control and his actions destroy his family forever (I kept the details of how much he harmed his father and sister ambiguous so that the audience could come up with their own conclusions and therefore could decide based on their own judgments if he deserves sympathy or not, but when I finish writing the script most likely he would have killed one or the both of them) . When Tae runs away from home and subsequently gets arrested he has no one, not even his sister, to turn to. When he tries to contact Joon, he finds that even his best friend won't pick up his calls.

I am currently working on a script for this and I made this edit using existing media content to help my friend and I visualize the overall story better so that we can understand each other's ideas and show this to people who may work with us in future on filming, etc (character names will be changed after actors are cast). The short film/series will also focus on how differently Tae and Joon are treated with Tae's family being on benefits and Joon being from a financially well off family of academics and doctors. To show this I have included shots of Tae and Joon in groups of friends having fun together and even them getting arrested after committing small crimes such as vandalism, but only Tae suffers the consequences (Tae is taken into custody, Joon gets taken back to his family home). Furthermore, I plan on writing about how Joon goes on to a good degree course at university while Tae is taken into custody and the authorities consider him a danger to society (which he might be, I plan on writing his character as morally ambiguous so that the audience can decide on whether he is truly guilty or not).

All scenes from Joon's perspective are not reliable as he has a tendency as a character to hallucinate and imagine things; this creates tension as the audience is left questioning if either Tae or Joon are good people. For example, when Tae is trying to call Joon we see Joon running towards a glass box covered in chains as he struggles to get to the phone and ultimately does not manage to pick up. Also, in the end we see Tae in a cage in a dark room. The audience knows that these scenes are impossible because that is not what prison actually looks like and the glass-box scene can't be real. Moreover, I plan on writing Tae's character as being reliant on others and extremely childish and naive, which may suggest his mental age being lower than his given one or a mental health issue. This is made obvious to the audience so that they begin to question both the characters as well as what is "real and not real".

This video, including the audio, was edited by me and as you can see was posted on "FILMFORBTS", a youtube channel for edits dedicated to the group BTS. I used many different scenes from short films and videos by the group. I used the actual voices of the actors in this video but the subtitles were created by me to fit the storyline and so may not mirror what is actually being said in Korean. I was inspired by the long term impacts of abuse and how toxic masculinity, shame culture, and class divide can affect how long it takes for someone to reach out for help (if they do at all) as well as the nature-nurture debate (is someone's ability to commit evil acts such as killing innate or environmental?).
