Whether working in video, painting, or photography, Ellie captures the life of a space by looking for evidence of interactions between people and their surroundings. Hillcrest Beat is a video project which works to make music out of the mundane commute through a montage of original sound and image with true fidelity; all sounds come directly from the footage. Voices, vehicles, trains, birds, and spaces themselves perform for the camera. The viewer experiences a barrage of handheld camera shots accompanied by loud, repititious sounds of wind chimes, bus engine, dings, house music, crosswalk signals, and this repitition confuses the perception of time passing. The viewer may become overstimulated or anxious. Moments of slowness and abstration represent the discovery break up quick cuts, like a moment to breathe during a hurried commute.
Repitition of an overheard “See ya tomorrow” reflects the repitition of days passing, and this feeling that the same things seen many times over become mundane. How can a repititious commute become more bearable, or even magical? Shots that come up in different parts of the film serve to confuse the perception of how much time has passed. One particular shot is broken up and shown at the beginning and end -- a slower nighttime shot, the only sound heard is the sound of the focus ring turning. This shot represents a realization that the world could look different through an altered perspective; it’s a birth of new sight and learning to see differently. The artist aims to sympathize with commuters, but wishes to propose that we may be able to discover something new about the life of the shared spaces we occupy rather than simply thinking about how long it takes to get from one place to another.
