Dana Jessen presented a set of music for bassoon and electronics featuring three works: Fireflies in Winter (2015) by Peter V. Swendsen, Copiale Interlude (2019) by Dana Jessen, and of an implacable subtraction (2014/15) by Paula Matthusen, performed together without pause. Jessen’s artistic interests and recent commissions highlight the blurred lines between composition, improvisation, and interpretation. The three works combine improvisations and wide-ranging extended techniques with electronic environments, offering a range of timbral possibilities and sonic transformations.

Biography:
Praised for her diverse talents, bassoonist Dana Jessen is active as a soloist, improviser, chamber musician, and new music specialist. Dana is the co-founder of Splinter Reeds, a San Francisco-based reed quintet, and has performed with the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, Alarm Will Sound, Amsterdam’s DOEK Collective, and Anthony Braxton’s Tri-Centric Orchestra, among others. Her debut solo album Carve (Innova Recordings 2017) features newly commissioned works for bassoon and electronics alongside solo acoustic improvisations. The album has received celebrated reviews from the Chicago Reader, All About Jazz, and ATTN:Magazine, among others. Dana is currently based in Oberlin, Ohio, where she serves as Associate Professor of Contemporary Music and Improvisation at the Oberlin Conservatory as well as the Director of Professional Development.
