"Fiends 3" is the third of an undetermined number of solo classical pieces in the "Fiends" series, NOT to be confused with the "Two Fiends" series, that pays tribute to Fiends (not friends) and to the marvelous influences, much to many's dismay and chagrin, they have had on my person and my composing.

"Fiends 3" is a fast and relentless bully of a piece with modal flavors and plenty of 3/4 - 6/8 cross-rhythms. It has aeolian, phrygian, and and harmonic minor tendencies with an elusive tonal center (mostly E, perhaps). The thematic material is tightly wound about 6-note, slurred motif, which if articulated just right, keeps the piece from sounding clunky and gives greater presence to the cross-rhythms.

The slurred bass throughout, along with a melody that provides the cross-rhythms, present particular difficulty when combined with the speedy tempo. And then there is the highly chromaticized coda in the higher registers with which to contend.

The "Fiends" pieces share little thematic material yet make the same sinister and haunting aura about them. I sincerely hope that you enjoy this piece as well as the other "Fiends" pieces.
