SIGNs

“Sign, Sign everywhere a sign. Blockin’ out the scenery. Breakin’ my mind, Do this, don’t do that. Can’t you read the sign?” - Five Man Electrical Band

“And yet no sign will be given to (this adulterous generation), except the sign of Jonah the prophet, for just as Jonah was three day and three nights in the belly of a sea monster, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” (Matt 12:39-40)

Signs are everywhere! The Five Man Electrical Band in 1970 wrote a song in rebellion to all the signs telling us what we have to do. In our culture today, many do not want to be told what to do, they want to be their own boss. And when it comes to God, they want Him to give them signs in order to believe, or have faith that He is really exists.

Virtues of the faith seem to be slowly vanishing, like trust and teachability. We would rather demand to do it our way and seek our own understanding for the truth. I admit, I have to repent of following my own ways daily.

The scribes and Pharisees wanted Jesus to prove His divinity, instead He humbled Himself to the point of death, even death on a cross. Jesus’ Kingdom was not of this world, and when He resurrected, they still didn’t believe. So what sign would have made a difference? The reference of Jonah and the whale didn’t make a lasting difference, so what other sign could Jesus have done to demonstrate His love for us?

The end of the song by the Five Man Electrical Band had an interesting verse. “And the sign said, Everybody welcome. Come in kneel down and pray, but when they passed around the plate at the end of it all, I didn’t have a penny to pay. So I got me a pen and a paper and I made up my own little sign, I said, “Thank you Lord, for thinkin’ about me. I’m alive and doing fine.””

This verse, even in rebellion to signs, had a point to make, that God loves them, which is true. But being alive and doing fine, did they really know Him? Are you living by faith or needing a sign as you follow the Serving King today? Those who love Him rarely need a sign as they chase on…
