. Frédéric Chopin's piano solo, Ballade
Number 2 in F major, Opus 38, was one
of the unfinished works he took to the
island of Mallorca for a winter stay with
with his short-time mistress, George Sand
("Aurore"). He was ill with TB, and
spending a cold and wet winter in island
made it worse.
While pianists, musicologists, and its
dedicatee German music critic, composer,
and pianist Robert Schumann, did not
like Opus 38, it is one of my favorites.
The simplicity of measures 1-46 in
the first four pages is followed by a
ferocious presto in the next five pages
in measures 47-82. At measure 83, the
simplicity returns in Tempo I. When
the Presto returns, it starts with the same
measure (141) as the previous (47).
Having the sheet music heightens my
appreciation for Chopin's work. The
Agitato in the final four pages here is
followed an eight measures (191-198)
that return, for the third time, to Tempo
I's single note simplicity.
So, the Presto con fuoco (very fast
with fire) in measure 47 section opens
in A minor. It returns to its original
tempo/style, and the first simple melody
returns and is expanded on. The Presto
con fuoco theme is reintroduced and
ends abruptly. The original theme
in F major is echoed in A minor, the
key of the Presto.
In addition, as with Ballades three
and four, Number Two is in compound
duple 6/8 time and that duple feels like
a heart beat (&1&2=LubDub, LubDub).
Very cool!

All four Ballades are played by South
Korean pianist Cho Seong-Jin. In 2015
he won XVII International Chopin
Piano Competition. Ballade Number
Two starts ten minutes into his video.
With sempre sostenuto e legatissimo
sotto voce (always sustained and legato
quietly) and a number of sections in
pianissimo, my version is boosted and
and edited.
Measure 44 with smorzando does
not call for preparing a campfire,
breaking graham crackers in half,
putting marshmallows on a stick,
holding them over the fire until they
are golden brown and gooey. It is
not "S'more", in music it means
"growing slower and softer".
Also, measures 112-114 and
136-140 do not have the lyrics
written by Yip Harburg to Harold
Arlen's music from the 1939 film
The Wizard of Oz. The song, was
sung by the Scarecrow, played by
Ray Bolger. It was originally
written by Arlen and Harburg for
the 1937 musical Hooray for
What! but was dropped from that
show. When they were hired to
do Oz, Harburg simply wrote
new lyrics to the catchy melody
syncopated in the style of tunes
used for vaudeville soft shoe.
When he was younger, Arlen
was a vaudeville accompanist.
I could while away the hours,
conferrin' with the flowers
consultin' with the rain.
And my head I'd be scratchin' while
my thoughts were busy hatchin'
if I only had a brain.
I'd unravel every riddle
for any individ'le,
in trouble or in pain.
With the thoughts I'd be thinkin'
I could be another Lincoln
if I only had a brain.
Oh, I could tell you why
the ocean's near the shore.
I could think of things
I never thunk before.
And then I'd sit,
and think some more.
I would not be just a nuffin'
my head all full of stuffin'
my heart all full of pain.
I would dance and be merry,
life would be a ding-a-derry,
if I only had a brain.
