Produced under a massive amount of limitations with a skeleton crew during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic. Shot on a Sony FX9 with vintage Leica lenses.

This music video for "I Am Not Waiting" by Canadian artist Austra takes a cue from the lyrics of the song, which voices escaping from a toxic situation and reaching a point where enough is enough. The video specifically is about breaking free from the layers of superficiality that is often applied to or imprinted upon us in today's hyper-image culture, in the age of face apps and AR. These devices often skew us from seeing each other for who we actually are. I find there is an exceptional amount of bravery and boldness in stepping outside of certain social expectations of how we present ourselves by being seen as vulnerable and exposed.

I attempted to merge a raw handheld cinema verite aesthetic, often associated with documentary film, with an extremely self-aware style of digital animation. By doing so, I was hoping to disrupt the way we passively engage in visual culture and and expose how "truths" and "representations" are carefully reconstructed.
