TEXT FROM THE GOSPEL AND HOMILY
The Lord be with you. And with your spirit
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. Glory to you o Lord.
Jesus said to his disciples: "I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three; a father will be divided against his son and a son against his father, a mother against her daughter and a daughter against her mother, a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law."
The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
In our gospel we have a really strong image and that is of fire. Fire you can see used in the Old Testament as well as in the New Testament. The Old Testament, think about the pillar of fire that led the Israelites through the desert or think about in the New Testament when the tongues of fire set upon each of the disciples as the Holy Spirit coming upon them. So fire is a great image and it’s an image I want to focus on because I don't believe that Jesus' intention was to bring this division but that the division would occur. Why would division occur? Well, when we're set afire, when the Holy Spirit comes upon us, sometimes people don't always agree with us and maybe a topic we may be mentioning like going to Mass every Sunday. Boy that's a really popular topic today. And you know the reaction is always mixed now, isn't it. God isn't creating the division, but we begin to separate ourselves don't we? We're either going to mass and we feel strongly about it and I know I do and the importance of that but it might be right to life and the importance of life and not pro-choice or something else. You see division can occur because when we speak from a passion a fire within us, about a particular topic it does cause moments in which people will say “I don't know if I believe that,” or “I don't know if I'm with you.” So today we're reminded in this gospel that yes, the Lord sets us on fire. The tongues of fire rest upon our heads and when the Holy Spirit is truly moving in us, not everyone is going to be with us. So as we gather today and we are sent forth and for all of our viewers, let that Holy Spirit set you on fire. And if there's something passionate about the gospel, about what Jesus has taught us, let that passion come out. Let that fire enliven you so that it will touch others. And those that you touch will also be ignited with that fire to make a difference in the world around us.
