Here’s one that not many riders know about. Maud Island is on the Quadra side of Seymour Narrows, and this complements Ripple Rock video #19. It’s the location that the shafts were dropped from to blow up the pinnacles in 1958, and the shaft entrances can still be seen (0:57, 2:50). The trail is a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde one - easy first part from Morte Lake, then technical with a hike-a-bike or two. Strong intermediates and up, or consider leaving bikes at the International car and walk the rest. It may be best not to take dogs as the one at the end of the video is often there. T-Bone’s (can’t remember real name) owner sort of lives at the causeway on and off year round.
I remember reading that this was also a WW2 gun emplacement site in addition to Yorke Island, but under strict secrecy. I can’t find information to confirm anymore, other than for Maud Island, New Zealand. As I remember it, the article said that two trappers that were found living on Maud were encouraged (forced) to stay on Maud for the remainder of the war to maintain the secrecy of the site. At that time, Maud was a true island without the causeway, which was built for the rock demolition project.
