"Hi, I'm Tina Gugeler and I have a Habit for Your Healthy Music Habitat.
One thing I like to do when I'm encouraging students to learn by ear is to use the little hammered dulcimer applications that you can get for Android or iPad tablets.
You're trying to learn a tune by ear, either by the computer or CD and it's too hard to pull your dulcimer around where it is. Listen to the music and stop it, and then see if you can match that pitch with your voice. And then find it on the instrument. [Sings: "La..."-I'm a bad singer"] but this will help.
And then you can kind of follow the music again and find the next pitch.
The little app is always in tune. There's a free one, or a minimal charge for another one, but they are very useful.
In a plane, if you're on a trip going somewhere, bring this and you can practice with your little ear buds.
But this device and trying to play stuff by ear is so convenient, 'cause you can set it right in front of your computer if you are learning a tune on youtube, or whatever.
Even youtube, you can slow it down, or have The Amazing Slowdowner (by Roni Software), but find that little section of melody.
Try to hum it...match your voice to that pitch and try to find it on the hammered dulcimer that is always in tune."
Dulcimer 16/15 Dulcimer App and Trapezoid Pocket Dulcimer app were mentioned and can be found in the app store of your tablet's platform.
