An unusual spiritual alegory in which a Christ-like stranger (Hunter) appears among a group of escaping convicts. Strong cast and typically good MGM production with a memorable Franz Waxman background score, but as Leonard Maltin (whom I frequently disagree with) says, "It's not for all tastes." An adaptation of Robert Sale's novel "Not Too Narrow -- Not Too Deep."TRIVIA: Condemned by the Legion of Decency for "irreverent use of Scripture" and "lustful complications," which limited the film's distribution in parts of the US.
CAST NOTES: The 8th and final screen pairing of Gable and Crawford. This 1940 release was Clark Gable's first film after "Gone with the Wind."
