Dazzle painting was a type of ship
camouflage used in World War I.
British artist Norman Wilkinson
proposed using complex geometric
patterns and shapes to confuse
German submarines.
Unlike other forms of camouflage,
the intention of dazzle camouflage
was not to conceal but to make it
difficult, in the time before radar
and sonar, to estimate British ship's
range, speed, and heading. It often
mislead German submarines on
British ship's course and so
caused the Germans to take poor
firing positions.
Dazzle was adopted by the UK and
then U.S Navy. Each ship's pattern
was unique to avoid making classes
of ships recognizable.
Dazzle attracted artists. Picasso
falsely claimed that Cubists invented
it. After WWI, Edward Wadsworth
and Arthur Lismer painted a series
of dazzle ship canvases.
Now, Googling "Razzle Dazzle
Camouflage Bold design art Prints"
leads to Redbubble~ redbubble.com.
Googling only "Razzle dazzle paintings"
leads to a host of black and whites.
All of the forty-eight images in this
three-minute video are my black for
white/white for black reversals and
adaptations, extensions, reductions,
and explorations of those googlings.
Some of the googlings by Peter
Blake were in color before being
reduced to black and white. Fun!!
