ADOPTED! Ten years ago this October (on the day CDHR opened its doors to the public), a Clydesdale mare named Annie was rescued and arrived at CDHR in foal. CDHR welcomed Annie's colt, Kaimi Meka Amos (aka Kai), to the farm seven months later. Kai's name meaning "bravely seeking sight," was a very appropriate choice. Unfortunately, little Kai was born with congenital (inherited) cataracts. Kai had corrective eye surgery, but the surgery complications left him blind in his left eye and limited vision in his right eye.
But that wasn't all of Kai's tough start to life. As a foal, he also fought pneumonia, ulcers, and suffered a fractured neck vertebra. All of these complications didn't hold Kai back one bit. Kai turned his lemons into lemonade and grew up to be the goofy, mischievous, fun, and lovable 9-year-old boy he is today.
We have always hoped someone would recognize just how special Kai is, even with his special needs. Someone who didn't see Kai as "the blind horse" at CDHR but saw him as the amazingly loving horse that he is. We are happy to say that dream we have held for Kai has happened! Kai has been adopted locally and left for his forever home yesterday! Kai's forever home is just a town away, and Dr. Golub will continue to be his veterinarian.
Kai now has a new younger sister, "Fudge." Fudge is a beautiful two-year-old Arabian that loves to frolic and play. It's a perfect match with Kai's spunky personality. Kai leaving has left a large hole at CDHR, and this has been a bittersweet adoption. Kai has been an everyday part of CDHR for nine years! All the volunteers will surely miss his antics and kisses, but we all know this is the best thing for Kai. His own family, his own younger herdmate to play with, his very own farm.
