GQ invited me to their inaugural GQ HEROES summit; bringing together an eclectic mix of leading cultural, political and sporting figures, to make a film that creatively documented the impact that such events can have on the progression and evolution of society at large.

This 'directors cut' aims, to not only capture the highlights of the event, but also inspire viewers to make their own mark on the world, and in so doing, become a 'hero' themselves.

GQ HEROES is a premier cultural summit, held in association with Flannels, that celebrates the heroic figures who are shaping society and culture around us. With guest speakers from the worlds of business, politics, media, fashion, sport and the arts, the inaugural event represents an unparalleled chance to hear iconic and lesser-known speakers who have accomplished modern-day Herculean feats, be it swimming non-stop around the UK, founding a media empire from their bedroom as a sixth-former or becoming the first Brit to fly commercially in space.

Keynote speakers included: comedian Ricky Gervais in conversation with Dylan Jones about political correctness and social media’s effects on comedy, and model and activist Adwoa Aboah sharing her thoughts on mental health and the causes close to her heart with grime entrepreneur Jamal Edwards. Investigative journalist Michael Wolff, author of Trump exposé Fire And Fury, who discussed the global reaction to his electrifying book, while Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie discussed the upcoming denouement of the programme’s final season.

A diverse range of cultural figures gave talks, interviews and panel discussions on their various areas of expertise throughout the event. Highlights included a panel on “What makes us brave?” featuring best-selling author and ex-Special Boat Service soldier Ant Middleton; Sir Richard Branson and Virgin Galactic pilot Dave Mackay on the quest for commercial space flight; and a discussion of “Mental strength in sport” with Olympian Victoria Pendleton and Ross Edgley, the first man to swim around the entire British Isles. Journalists Alastair Campbell and Piers Morgan went head-to-head on the subject of “The Art of the Political Interview”, and Tracey Emin talked to actor and art collector Russell Tovey on “My Life in Art”.

Other speakers include Sir Paul Smith, David Lammy MP, fashion designer Matthew Williams, photographer Rankin, Chuka Umunna MP, actress Naomie Harris and artist Marc Quinn. For a full list, visit the GQ HEROES website.
