Created and Performed by Sara Porter
Presented online by Winnipeg's Contemporary Dancers June 24-July 04, 2021
Sara Porter is an adventurous performer and writer. Working at the intersection of text + movement, she presents a vulnerable and defiant presence onstage. Noted for being truly multi-disciplinary – and her wry sense of humor – Porter’s work is rooted in her feminist, queer worldview, and deals with the body as a point of personal reflection.
Originally from Nova Scotia, Porter worked out of Montreal and the UK before settling in Toronto in 2000.
Porter’s one-woman show – “Sara does a Solo” (2016) – about returning to dancing after raising kids – was hailed as “Irreverent, soulful and magnificent” by New York City presenters and toured across Canada and the US. Her next work – “Getting to know your Fruit” (2019) – about coming out, fruit history, and the nature of memoir itself, was presented at Fall for Dance North International Presenters Showcase and is being transformed into film by Zento Productions.
Porter recently collaborated with Vickie Fagan on the short film “Blue” and she is featured on CBC Gem’s “The Move”.
Creating over thirty works since 1990, popular works include “Those Penetrating Dreams”, a spoof on Harlequin romances; “Blossom”, about erotic poetry that compares women to flowers; and the iconic “Opus Ornithologicus: the great bird work”, that she performed with legendary Scottish bagpiper Martyn Bennett. She was invited to perform the clown-infused work for Prince Charles in the Royal Garden Party at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh.
A recipient of Chalmers Arts Fellowship 2019, Porter researches memoir & movement – an interdisciplinary form that incorporates literary memoir, poetry, vocal work and movement improvisation, for which she also offers workshops internationally.
Sara’s dance writing has been published in Canada and Scotland for 25 years and she is biographer of Canadian dance icon Peter Boneham. As an educator, Sara has written and taught new curriculum in contemporary dance for university and college programs in Canada and Scotland.
Sara has a BA in Fine Arts from Acadia University (NS) and a MA in Dance Studies from University of Surrey in England. Her company Sara Porter Productions was established in 2020 to support her growing body of work.
