Static shot through a window, weather and time of day changes the colours and textures of the frame, as time loops in on itself.

My smartphone film is an aesthetic exploration of the colours and textures of a single shot and a thematic exploration of the circular monotony of time and life in lockdown, using my window as a lens to record different times of day, as animals pass through the yard and different weather conditions create diverse tones in the shot. Aesthetically, in the film, I also utilise shadows and unnatural light to create imagery and add variety to the colours and textures of the frame, which was then enhanced and manipulated in post-production. A particular technique I explored was shooting flash from another camera below and out of frame into the phone recording, creating both an interesting sound and visual to use as means to transition between different times of day. Sonically, I recorded a number of atmospheric noises in my backyard and layered them over droning ambient music a friend of mine made to create the soundscape of the film. This soundscape builds tension in the darker night shots and releases it in the brighter daytime shots, distorting as the image distorts and clearing up as the image does. Thematically, the film is a comment on the seemingly looping and circular nature of life under lockdown, as it begins and ends with the same shot of the blackbird, depicting 24 hours of typical Melbourne weather in-between, creating this never-ending cycle. Ultimately, with this smartphone film I am attempting to touch into the monotony of life in lockdown, while breaking through it with an array of visually interesting static shots that explore both the mundane and the more abstract.
