As requested, this is the intro to my edit of The Hobbit. I don't believe I've ever properly shared this intro before (at least not in this final version before) and it would be good to get feedback considering this is the opening of the film.
There are more changes and alterations here than I can physically list, but ultimately I wanted to mirror the opening to The Lord of the Rings as much as possible. I open with the original New Line Cinema logo and have Bilbo's voice over play during a black screen before fading into the title (similar to Galadriel's prologue in Fellowship of the Ring). I am still not keen on the Frodo namedrop at the beginning as I want the Hobbit to be its own thing but I don't think there's any way around this without spoiling the voice over.
From there we skip the prologue and open immediately with 'In a hole in the ground...' at the Shire. Like most edits, I wanted the Hobbit to begin with humble and small beginnings like the book. From here, M4 supplied me with the DVD menu footage of the Bag End door opening and some of the interior of Bag End. This is where people could find my intro very divisive. On the one hand, some would argue that the door opening by itself feels very documentary (or even the fact that the door appears to be automatic) but my reason for opening with this is, similar to the book, it acquaints the viewer or reader into the world of a Hobbit and explains/shows what a Hobbit hole is. The Hobbit book has many moments where it specifically refers to the reader and explains things to a newcomer into the world of Middle-Earth. This is something I wanted to get a sense of in my edit. I have also taken some 3D rendering of the interior of Bag End from YouTube.
From here we move into An Unexpected Journey's extended Shire sequence which I have brought forward from after Gandalf's meeting with Bilbo to the main intro. It helps to introduce us into this environment and the Hobbit's way of life and is a nice look into Bilbo's day to day lifestyle.
I have then taken a 4k tour of New Zealand video off of YouTube for the new title card for There and Back Again. Unintentionally, I think it works very well as a match cut to the smoke ring. We exit the circular, ring-like door and fade into the smoke ring of Gandalf's. I think the slow zoom from the Hobbit hole into the wide world is also a very fitting image of the theme of the Hobbit.
In terms of a general update, I am working tirelessly to try and get this done for mid December. Please understand I have a lot of commitments also from work, guitar lessons/practice, my own YouTube channel, freelance editing among other things. So sometimes the time I can spend on the edit is very fleeting. There are only a few rotoscopes that remain and some voice work. If I am pushed for time, I can always release what I have and fix or patch up certain shots in a subsequent release. I owe you guys that release date in December.
Thanks for your continued support!
