Laser scanning technology enables the study of built heritage in unprecedented detail. In this video showing the 800-year-old Basilica of St Anthony in Padua, a transverse section descends from the soaring domes to the marble floors, some 70 metres below. As in an anatomical slice, the point cloud reveals the subtlest features of this major landmark of European medieval architecture. Wooden structures, secret passages and slender brick vaults suddenly appear as a single harmonious body. The result of 2,000 scans, the digital model supports ongoing investigations into the basilica's mysterious history, such as the identification of construction phases and their absolute dating with radiocarbon and dendrochronology. Point clouds are also a powerful tool of communication between researchers and the public, as they can straightforwardly be converted into detailed plans or 3D models.

Comment of the jury:
This beautiful visualisation, technically based on advanced laser scanning technology, progressively reveals the different areas and layers of a basilica building. The poetic film not only provides an enormous amount of information in a very condensed way but also surprises with its bird’s-eye-view approach, starting with the geometric and organic forms of the cupolas instead of conceptually building up the basilica from the ground.
