We attended the Stop Black Deaths In Custody Rally this past June in Melbourne and made a last minute choice to film it on our super 8 - and I’m glad we did, because we saw and heard some pretty powerful things that day.

The voiceover you hear is by Meyne Wyatt @meyneg (please go listen to his full speech on YouTube or @abcindigenous IGTV) and the music you hear is ‘Don’t Shoot’ by @tazconley (you can support & license his music via @musicbed).

This event took place on the unceded territory of the Kulin Nations, and we thank @warrevolt for organising it, for rallying Australia to finally turn inward & look at the severe inequality taking place here, to acknowledge that Blak Lives Matter. For 4 hours we stood and listened to the countless stories of Indigenous abuse & death at the hands of police, to stories just like George Floyd’s. Everyone was so engaged, it was incredible to see protesters putting their phones away during speeches and genuinely absorbing what was being said on a human level. Please, if you can make it to a protest you should do so, never underestimate the effect it will have on you and those around you, be a body, be a number, turn up and engage with what’s happening on the land you’re privileged to live on.

Rallying is an essential service, and screw everyone who says it isn’t.
