skate rampsskateboardingA lost gem! Free Cinema meets club visuals... Me and Melissa curated a skateboard festival in Clissold Park, Stoke Newington - yeh I know it was 2001 and art and sport were seen as strange bedfellows so they called us "curators". A giant screen courtesy of Cartoon Network's PowerPuff Girls (I kid you not) meant we could have daytime club visuals - which were a mix of the usual nonsense plus live cameras embedded in the skateramps (courtesy of Konstantinos Mavromichalos - aka LoRez Crimez) and great tech and support and live video mixing from Giles Thacker, Exceeda Brendan and Emma at insight lighting and Mak (RIP) from Electroworks. We got old friends and collaborators - like Carl Loben to coordinate DJs and great acts like Ty (RIP last year from COVID) and loads of local bands. And they built a skatepark for the event which eventually helped prove there was a need for a permanent skatepark there. This video was a commission from the Extreme Sports Channel with the budget being given over to help run the event. This was a lovely collaborative piece - we got loads of people to shoot in their own style - and even strapped a camera to the baby buggy of my then infant Jacob! Then three of us - Xavier, Geoff and me - edited different parts of it. I then seamlessly (?!) braided everything together into this voice over-less doc, inspired by the slightly detached observational approach of Free Cinema but infused with the twitchy early digital noodlings of mid 90s+ club visuals. Amazingly Extreme left all editorial up to us and then broadcast the piece without a single change! The original master for this was destroyed in the recent sewage flood at my studio, so I was delighted when I found this MiniDV submaster (warning it has some nasty digital dropout at 4m15s) (PS for digital noodlings see my abstract countdown clock at the start - made out of processed VHS dropout and noise - turtly rad man)
