SHOPPING FOR A FACE AS SEEN IN A DREAM (2019)

Poetry as an open question on the role of the human body in hyper-mediatized environments, specifically the face as the agreed place of subjectivity. This was my contribution to the Surrealist group Peculiar Mormyrid Journal’s Polymorph Bodyshop and the questions: “What are the capabilities of the body today?” and “What could the body of the future look like?”. My answer today dives back into the Virtual level of reality, beyond human understanding but still tied to it through speculation and symbolic interactions of forces. At the Virtual level, the abstract system of “faciality” comes up against our allegedly subjective identity. This system can and must be escaped, by becoming something other than conventionally human, through a rearranged order of words and images that would function somewhat like Andre Breton's glass house: providing revelation through the imaginative faculty while still in contact with material sensation and recognizable mechanisms of thought. Seeing through the glass house means seeing only consequences and possibilities.

Premiered with the Polymorph Bodyshop at The Bakery arts complex in Atlanta and East Village Arts of Birmingham in Alabama. Official selection for The Institute+ for Experimental Arts' International Video Poetry Festival in Athens. Screened in the program PSYCHEDELIC CINE-REVOLUTION, curated by Darko Duilo and hosted at Kino Klub Split in Croatia. Official selection for Big Boy Collective's first edition of the video zine Dumping Hour in Echo Park Film Center, Los Ángeles.

Contains intervened footage from VHS documentaries on the human body and other clips found on YouTube about tiger lilies, dogs, swimming fish and cops joining a Mexican party.

Audio contains sampled & intervened material from Andy Stott, Borgore, FreshThPharmacy, SOPHIE (and a video tutorial on how to make music that sounds like SOPHIE), Bilie Eilish, my piece SECOND AQUARIUM, a woman recording sunflower sounds and a group of Mexican teens from Juárez meandering and drinking in the dark.

The line "Resolution determines visibility" comes from Hito Steyerl's piece How Not To Be Seen: A Fucking Didactic Educational MOV. File (2013), and the question "How to unmake the face?" alludes to Deleuze and Guattari's milieu on the faciality system (Year Zero: Faciality) in the book A Thousand Plateaus (1980).
