FROM THE GARDEN. This film, Sequence 13, is one of 24 films that were projected for the duration of the exhibition Open Equations at the Gallery-Peter-Sillem in the fall of 2019. They were made in an enclosed private garden in Amman, Jordan. This garden, which attracted me through its gate as a passerby, became a study in how we deal with access, the idea of nature and artificial space.
The garden, meticulously maintained, sits between two houses in which there are no current residents.
The films reflect many contradictions of how we see and access space and as well as the dichotomy of nature that finds itself in an urban surrounding. The interplay of birdsong with traffic and the noise created by generators and water pumps in the films are essential elements of the idea that although we are looking at an attempt at creating an ideal space, that gardens as structure are always artificial, that parts of nature find their way to survive but can only do so if painstakingly maintained.
