Hi,
I am Linas Mikuta, the director and producer of a film, Romanas’s Childhood. These days, we talk
a lot about the rights of the child and the right ways of child’s upbringing. We care about the child’s
well-being, his or her safety and comfort. Society also makes demands on parents—what they as
parents should be in order to be able to raise and bring up a child. ”Give your child everything,”
“Know everything about him or her,” ”Provide your child with a safe environment”… All this is
very important, but this way of upbringing and this type of relationship with the child also have its
disadvantages. Putting a child in a bubble of parental safety and comfort can limit his/her
opportunities to explore the world independently, experience freedom and at the same time, feel
responsibility.
When I met the eight-year-old boy Romanas, I was captivated by his independence, unconstraint
and sense of responsibility. Growing up in a family at social risk, lacking essential things, Romanas
has remained curious, flexible and vital, a stark contrast to some of his peers. Yes, Romanas’s life
bears more risks than his friends, but it is also more in-depth and free.
This boy and his family pose crucial questions: What is more important in life, security or freedom?
When do we learn more by living in comfort or danger? What is childhood in general and what
impact does it have on the rest of our lives? I invite you to think about it when watching our film.
