. In the 1944 noir classic film, Laura, the
titular character was played by Gene Tierney.
Once principal photography was completed,
the director, Otto Preminger, hired David
Raksin to score the film. Preminger wanted to
use "Sophisticated Lady" by Duke Ellington
for the main theme, but Raksin said "No".
Alfred Newman, music director at Fox,
convinced Preminger to give Raksin a week-
end to write something original. Inspired by
a Dear John letter he had once received from
a girlfriend, Raksin wrote the haunting theme.
Johnny Mercer later wrote lyrics.
"Laura" became a jazz standard recorded
by more than four hundred artists, including
Stan Kenton, Dick Haymes, Woody Herman,
Nat King Cole, The Four Freshmen, and
Frank Sinatra. In 1999, the film was selected
for preservation in the U.S.'s National Film
Registry.
My adaptation of Johnny Mercer's lyrics are
the starting point for the images in this video~
A fragrance in the breeze, an alluring scent.
Breath of stranger, and you recall it still.
Feelings of knowing someone never met
haunts your days and always will.

The face, the image, in a misty light,
footsteps that you hear down the hall.
The laugh that floats in a summer night;
yet, you can never quite recall.

Looks and smiles in trades blowing thru.
Those eyes, how familiar they seem.
Was the flame felt, the first ever true?
The memory is clear, but it's only a dream.

Fragrances and feelings, a scent and a smile,
forgotten and remember, lost and found.
Bewilderments hold my heavy heart on trial,
but pleadings only confuse and confound.

So, these few fractal images I share,
clearly remembered thru woe and care.

In the end, the music track for this video
is The Mission by Jerry Goldsmith.
It is from the 2002 film, The Sum of all
Fears, based on Tom Clancy's 1991 novel
of the same name. The Paul Williams
lyrics were translated into Latin by A. E.
Stallings. Here is a link to The City of
Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.

The English version of the Latin lyrics,
sung by soprano Shana Blake Hill from
the Los Angeles Opera Theatre, are below:

Remember. If we could remember
the moment of our birth
we give our voice to songs and
whispers and know what life is worth.

Remember, remember.
Suddenly there's beauty
in peace there's all the past,
and sorrow clings to angry questions
the days of dust at last.

And morning holds us
when worlds come tumbling down,
a dance of ghosts and ragged dreams
spinning round, spinning round,
spinning round. Spinning round.

I remember, remember.
Remember remember remember.
If we could remember
the power of the light that cripple
prayers are sometimes answered
and hope survives the night,
and hope survives the night.
I remember, umm, I remember,
remember. Remember.
