the first British female composer to win an
Academy Award. She received it for the
score of Emma. In addition, she was the
first female composer to win a Primetime
Emmy Award. The received that for the
film Bessie.
She has received two other Academy
nominations for Cider House Rules and
Chocolat, which earned her a Golden
Globe nood. Rachel was appointed
Officer of the Order of the British
Empire in 2010, and she is an honorary
fellow of Worcester College, Oxford.
Rachel Portman has also written more
than 100 scores for film, television, and
theatre. They include The Manchurian
Candidate, Oliver Twist, Hart’s War,
Only You, Legend of Bagger Vance,
Beloved, Benny and Joon, Life is Sweet,
Never Let Me Go, Grey Gardens, The
Duchess, One Day, The Vow, Snow
Flower and the Secret Fan, Lake House,
Infamous, Mona Lisa Smile, Human
Stain, Belle, Dolphin Tale 2, and Race.
Ms. Portman has written a musical
of Little House on the Prairie as well
as an opera of Saint Exupery's, The
Little Prince for the Houston Grand
Opera.
For the BBC Proms concerts, she
was commissioned to write a dramatic
choral symphony, The Water Diviner.
