This is the kind of concentrated story where everyday activities easily reveal their underlying significance, living here in a Buddhist country, that has profound and resonant animistic layers underneath.
Today, Rasy’s brother Ratana decided that he would release the big fish that he had caught in the lotus pond, instead of eating it. This was because he had begun to consider that this fish had so many little baby fishes still under its care; he was overtaken by compassion. Coincidentally, the same day, he also helped to clean the fish pond in the residence building, and I was struck by the care and gentleness of his gestures, in handling the fish, especially in the moments of releasing them back in the cleansed pond.
