This project explores the boundaries of private memory and fictive narrative through the making of a reflexive, archive-based film. This film is made from two primary components. The first: 295 minutes of found, silent 8mm footage. This is private, moving–picture of an unknown person which can be considered home-movie; ordinary events captured as personal memories—not intended to contribute to public history. The second: audio documentation collected in the process of making this film. This comes from various national archives, online sources, and captured recordings. Through the decontextualization and reconstruction of these audio and visual documents, this film aims to create the conditions in which new narratives can be derived, new events can be conceived, and a new representation of memory can be presented. The entanglement of a strangers footage, fictitious narrative, and memories of my own—told through moving–image and sound design—aims to reflect how we remember the past, and further, provoke reflection on the nature of the private archive.
