At the intersection of art and activism lies people’s lived experiences rich in hopes and driven by values , resilience, and dignity. During times of struggle, these two lines come together and become less defined for frontline communities such as low wage workers, artists, community organizers, immigrant and BIPOC communities . In 2018, San Francisco's Dance Mission Theater began a unique collaboration with La Colectiva de Mujeres, a worker-led member cooperative that seeks to unite, empower and organize women domestic workers. This collaboration created Baile Colectivo, a wellness program that centers holistic healing as a way to radicalize the inner activist, and art-making as a way to develop leadership, and transform personal realities. In the last 3 years, Baile Colectivo has reached more than 500+ workers through engagement in theater, dance and musical production all facilitated through a Popular Education model where the voices of the workers are front-center. Most recently, Baile Colectivo produced “Mujeres, Trabajo, Salud,” a short-film movie that highlights the lives of 16 member leaders from La Colectiva showcasing poetry, dance, theater, and moving testimonials about the domestic work industry and their need for stronger worker protection.
Join us to celebrate domestic workers' voices and learn about their fight to obtain Paid Sick Leave in the city of San Francisco. According to Hand in Hand, the Domestic Employer Network “domestic workers are the workforce with the highest estimated number of minimum wage violations in the city, meaning that these workers are less likely than all others to be paid wages they are due, or even get paid at all.” For this reason, workers are uniting and organizing to win a local paid-time off program that would allow them to accrue “off” hours to care for themselves and their families.
