This video explores the phenomenal of historical oppression Native Americans face through showing images of me, a young Native American woman and my relationship to the Hopi Nation through my mom, an older Native American woman who has a daughter living away from the reservation. Unlike my mom, my connection to the Hopi culture is through her and my house, miles away from our reservation in Arizona and the different cultural items I have seen everyday since I was a little girl. I am an assimilated Native American, especially compared to my mother and the differences in our childhood, me growing in Cambridge while my mom grew up on the reservation. I wanted to highlight our differences and similarities because of historical oppression and assimilation through my own film-making and finally capture my mom in all of her glory, my opening to my Native American identity.
