Films include:
Carnival Night (1956)
Dir. Eldar Ryazanov
A Soviet classic, this seemingly light-hearted comedy is a subversive satire on Soviet top-down bureaucracy

Cheryomuski (1962)
Dir. Herbert Rappaport
An adaptation of Dmitri Shostakovich operetta which both criticises and celebrates the ambitious building projects in Moscow

Karine (1969)
Dir. Arman Manaryan
Performed in Armenian, this adaptation is a vivid example of the often overlooked diversity of Soviet cultural landscape

Melodies of the Vera Quarter (1973)
Dir. Giorgi Shengelaia
Released at a time of extreme corruption in Georgia, it is possible to see the political subtext of the film through its parody of unjust officials

We are from Jazz (1983)
Dir. Karen Shakhnazarov
Released in the 1980s and casting an eye back to the jazz's beginnings in the 1920s in USSR, this comedy is an example of loosening of censorship in the late USSR

A Man from the Boulevard des Capucines (1987)
Dir. Alla Surikova
This red Western acts as an exploration into the nature of cinema. The film lovingly plays with devices of American film, whilst condemning the culture

Hipsters (2008)
Dir. Valery Todorovsky
A modern perspective on Soviet counter-culture Stilyagi (corresponding to the Beat Generation), this eclectic musical contextualises contemporary tastes within the Soviet musical tradition

Leto (2018)
Dir. Kirill Serebryannikov
Leto is a foray into Leningrad’s 1980’s music scene. Depicting real cult figures from the time, and demonstrating nostalgia for the time’s epoch, it explores Wester music’s impact on the pre-Perestroika underground scene
